The Issaquah salmon hatchery is coming back strong after the rough effects of the pandemic. Robin Kelley, director of the Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery (F.I.S.H.), presented an update at our May 4 general meeting, where she described locking down the facility for two years and the paid staff being cut from four to one. On the upswing, the hatchery has two new handicapped-acccesible picnic tables, a roof structure over a memorial plaque, fresh directional signs, an audio tour in six languages, iPads to show things visitors can't see (at least at that moment), and a refreshed garden of native plants. Plans are in the works to add cement benches, a memorial circle, and a mosaic. Visitors can also enjoy "Saturdays with Salmon," which will explore topics such as environmental stewardship, stream walks, and native plants.
